Problem

Financial management is hard if you are not an expert, and most people are not. This is why businesses and high net-worth earners pay highly skilled people to manage their finances. This is something the common man needs but doesn’t have. We are working to change that. We believe anyone that has a smartphone should not have to struggle with their finances because they have technology that can be programmed to do this for them in their hands and pockets.

Solution

To solve this problem we are building a product that helps people build good money habits. Pacto allows people to create highly personalized financial plans tailored to their lifestyles and financial profiles. Pacto also automates budget execution and bill payment for the regular person. Financial management can make or break the living experience for the average person, and we want to improve what the financial management process looks like.

Learnings

I learned I need to be patient with my research.

At under 50 respondents, the data from our survey indicated that most people use budget apps, but as our data grew, it proved that to be wrong. This incident gave me my first real lesson about the danger of underrepresentation during research.

I deepened my understanding of Visual Hierarchy

When learning design, I almost always used only 2 calls to action (secondary and primary), but when creating this I was pushed out of my comfort zone to be able to use 3 or more without messing up the hierarchy of the screen.

I learned the power of iteration and attention to detail.

Showing up daily to design an interface allowed me to notice the upward progression in the quality of the screens I designed as we peeled back the layers on what needed to be done.

Understood when to use Quantitative or Qualitative Research

Doing research for a real product has moved me beyond the theory of quantitative and qualitative research. In my experience, talking to people provided nuance and depth to the results of my survey.
